Mark Hillis

Primarily self-taught (1 year of lessons from the “Guitar Mann” Phoenix, AZ), Mark Hillis has been playing guitar since 1982 and gradually developing his style into what you hear on this recent CD. The most recent project, Acoustic Environment, is an instrumental collaboration with several phenomenal musicians. Although some have classified the music on Acoustic Environment as a progressive mixture of rock, classical and the avant-garde, Mark prefers to simply label the musical genre as “music for driving and thinking that doesn’t suck”.

Mark’s first musical venture, simply titled Harlequin (1990), was quite different from the current work. He still refuses to apologize for the torn jeans, sparkly shirts and unknown damage to the o-zone via hairspray that occurred during these years. Seriously though, the music was progressive hard rock akin to Queensryche and Dokken. This CD was recorded during his college years at Northern Arizona State University.

When Mark isn't playing guitar he operates his photography business in San Diego. He does a range of work including commercial, wedding, portrait and fine-art. His commercial client list includes: Petco, Dillards, Honeywell, Tulliani International, CITY AZ Magazine, Thin Air Journal, and Motorola, to name a few. Additionally, his fine-art photography has been featured in Digital Imaging Magazine and in Digital Fine Art Magazine. He can also be seen occasionally teaching photography at City College in San Diego.
